Upcycling/Re-Fashion for Teens

Upcycling/Re-Fashion for Teens In-Person

Let’s get creative with old clothing! Learn basic hand sewing techniques to create patches &
applique designs that can be applied to older clothing to give it a new life.

In this class we’ll start with some sewing basics then jump into how to cut patches and applique
designs to sew onto existing clothing pieces brought from home. We’ll also cover 1-2 sewing
techniques to attach the patches/applique designs to the clothing. These sewing techniques can
also be used to create unique and personalized designs on existing clothing.

Things to bring:

  • An item of clothing you’d like to embellish (ex: jeans, button front shirts, sweatshirts, denim jackets, pj pants, even an old tote bag!)
  • Optional: clothing or textiles you’d like to cut up and repurpose (ex: old clothing, sheets, fabric scraps)
  • Optional: fabric cutting scissors

About the instructor: Melissa Orellana lives with her family in Cumberland. She learned to sew in middle school and has been sewing ever since. She loves hand stitching, vintage sewing patterns and making her own clothing.
