Vermicomposting with WormMainea In-Person
Do you compost outdoors in the summer and want to continue all winter? Are you new to composting and want to give vermicomposting a try? Vermicomposting is the use of earthworms to convert organic waste into fertilizer. Learn how to build a worm bin and to keep your worm bin trouble-free. We'll discuss feeding and monitoring your bin; harvesting and using vermicompost as a soil amendment; and making vermicompost tea. Information about hot composting will also be covered.
Mark Follansbee from WormMainea will answer questions and address rumors and myths about vermicomposting. Mark is a toxicologist and environmental scientist, who has been vermicomposting since 2000 and has been teaching others to vermicompost successfully since 2005 as WormMainea.
Optional: This program is free, and it's very acceptable to just attend for information's sake. Mark will take us through the process of worm composting and building your own bin. However, participants have the option of purchasing starter kits and/or worms in advance, if they wish.
If you think you might be interested in purchasing a kit or worms, Mark will be happy to bring the items for takehome convenience. Kits include a worm bin and 1 pound of worms (a bed run): $40. Alternatively (and also optional), interested participants can purchase a bed run of worms for $25. The registration form leads you through the process. Payment can be made on the day of the event.
